After about 18 hours of non-stop media hype picking choice snippets from the Megan & Harry Oprah Interview, I decided I thought I’d review the interview live, as it was finally broadcast on ITV in the UK. I’m already finding it odd that the interview itself wasn’t broadcast the same time as the US – especially in this day and age after a decade of broadcasting ‘same time as the USA’ being a thing: Lost, Game of Thrones etc. Also, not focusing about the timing of the interview, while Price Philip is currently in hospital etc – as these things are organised months in advance.

From the beginning, I found it bizarre that the focus on Megan and not Prince Harry. I appreciated that the disclaimer of payment (or lack of) was upfront and honest. But as always begs the question – what is the intent? Why now?

So the lack of research on Megan’s part was made abundantly clear in the first segment. So not realising that the Royal family is different from a celebrity in LA, is almost confusing and baffling. Even from an American point of view, I know that my friends are not that naive and foolish. So for Megan to try and imply she had no idea – is surreal.

It is fascinating that Megan is the victim in every story that was discussed in the interview. It maybe her truth, however, unsure that she cannot be at fault. Which one who made Kate and/or Megan cry is such a nonissue, that I’m confused why that it even made the interview. Why is painting Kate as a bitch of making her cry anything of importance?

Silenced and lack of protection seems to be an ongoing issue for Megan – however, from her discussions, the wrong protection was actually offered to her by palace officials. Which is actually a clear difference. From experience, if you ask for help in a situation, you cannot then dictate how that help is then produced / done. It is a balance. So listening to how she explains the situations, she isn’t helping her position on matters. Or – another way to put it – she seemed to want it both ways.

I find it amazing that the constant parallels between Kate and Megan – drawn more by Megan, than Oprah. Making it a situation about who made who cry for what when – why?! Obviously more important for Megan, however for the audience it really came across as petty. Especially when the news article came out 6 months after the fact.

This whole conversation about security and titles seemed bizarre. Firstly, the Metropolitan Police are in charge of the Royal protection, so unless she was talking directly to them, seems odd to be discussion before the baby was born – unless it was a discussion about the baby’s title, and the consequences of the decisions between title or not.

Megan slipped too much information concerning the race of their child, Archie. A conversation between Harry and this person, should not have been mentioned or discussed by Megan. From a point of view of how serious the statement and position is – that if true is truly disgusting – should not have come from Megan. That surely was a Harry story to tell, if he chose to or not. The fact that Megan said “I’ve lost a lot”, not ‘they’ or ‘Harry and I’ – I find very telling about the situation fully.

I found when Harry joined the conversation, the interview became way more weighty and more meaningful. But unsure whether it was because of the choice of subjects, or because Oprah decided to focus on factual information with him instead of ‘feelings’ as much. The willingness of Harry to explain clearly between family and ‘The Firm’ was fascinating and insightful of being ‘trapped’. Found it more informative than Megan’s ‘outsider coming in’ explanation.

But the dumb foundered moment of spending an hour of the programme trying to persuade the audience that it wasn’t Megan that convinced Harry to leave as “Megxit” – Harry then confirms that if it wasn’t for Megan, he wouldn’t have left. Foot in mouth moment.

When Oprah brought up about the earlier Archie race question – and it is clear Harry was not willing to make that public… awkward. No mention who it was. Wasn’t willing to discuss it. Completely shut down.

Overall, it was an interesting interview, but with very little substance – ignoring the race claim. I think they sat there and spoke their truths – but unsure that it would be everyone’s truth in the situation. I find it that the couple did think they could have it (somehow) both ways – or cherry-pick the best bits. Not only that, but I also do find it strange that Harry didn’t realise that things would change when he left the Royal family – i.e. security, pay etc.
