So another Discovery+ Original, The Osbournes: Night Of Terror. From the outset, was an interesting mixed bag of randomness. So coming from his Portals to Hell series, Jack Osbourne, has decided to include his family in a covid friendly production. Or it would be a covid friendly production if there wasn’t a few dozen production team with face masks on following them around.
The location chosen, Heritage Square in Los Angeles – was genuinely interesting to me. The amount of different architecture on this one property was beautiful – a place I’d very much like to visit.
Kelly’s Involvement
I was concerned about Kelly Osbourne at first. She was very ‘flappy’ and diva-like at the beginning of the episode. I appreciate that this was supposedly her first ghost hunt, but they came across as pulling little tantrums about the hunting of ghosts. Causing mischief about feelings she was having. Basically running away from the action she was supposed to be capturing.
However, I became pleasantly surprised about how she developed throughout the 90 min episode. She grew – both with skills and confidence – and by the end of the episode was a strong and determined person. In fact, both Jack and Kelly make a fantastic team on screen. Their sibling banter was entertaining and funny – but also supportive in the right places. Genuinely a good possible team for the future of such shows? I, for one, would be interested in more.
Ozzy & Sharon
What let the show down was Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne… I simply do not understand the point of their participation.
Ozzy and Sharon were sitting in their “cat piss” smelling house, supposedly watching the investigation live, commenting on it as it was happening. It was like a weird Gogglebox episode – without the humour, entertainment nor reasoning behind it. At one point, the production team obviously realised similar concerns, so got a psychic to sit down with them at their house (which I kind of assume goes against the covid friendly idea for the show), and then to proceed to freak the parents out with her predictions.
So now you have a couple who are miles away from the actual investigation, with no real input to said investigation, yelling random curse words at an iMac. Bizarre choice for the production.
What would have been more interesting (if I was doing the production) was to give Ozzy and Sharon the raw live feeds of the cameras dotted about Heritage Square. So they could guide Jack and Kelly to places they saw interesting things happening in or hearing noises.
Conclusion
Overall I felt that Jack and Kelly really worked well together as a team – and would definitely like to see more of them teaming up in the future. Especially in this field. I would also enjoy similar locations like this, where the team could spend a decent amount of time across a wide area to sink their teeth in to. I have deducted points, however, for the lack of any value bought by Ozzy and Sharon in this case. I totally appreciate this was a family shindig, but on this instance, they didn’t bring any value to the programme I’m afraid to say.
