I was catching up on a few YouTube videos over the weekend, and stumbled across an interview Nora from the channel “The Professional Hobo” (a channel I’m subbed to), who talks about travelling and adventures full time.
This weekend’s release was an interview with Dave & Deb from The Planet D (a channel I’d never heard of before). However, I watched anyway as I always enjoy listening to others experiences – learning tips and ideas etc.
Turns out, they were talking about their best adventures they had been on. But number 2 on their list sounded EPIC! The sort of epic, where you stop everything, to ensure you are paying attention. And attention I paid… The Mongol Rally.
So what is the Mongol Rally? Well according to the official website, the rules seem quite simple:
Rule 1. You can only take a farcically small vehicle of 1 litre or less
(we will allow up to a 1.2 if you’re a bit weak)
Rule 2. You’re completely on your own
Rule 3. You’ve got to raise £500 for charity
Sounds fantastic, but the adventure is always best shared – especially the driving. Also, thoughts would need to be turned to a worthy charity that would benefit from the fundraising. But the concept sounds amazing, and what’s more, I am shocked that I hadn’t stumbled across this before.
You know things are awesome, when the disclaimer of the site reads:
“These are genuinely dangerous things to do. The website is written in a light-hearted fashion but you cannot overestimate the risks involved in taking part in this adventure.
Your chances of being seriously injured or dying as a result of taking part are high. Individuals who have taken part in past Adventurists’ adventures have been permanently disfigured, seriously disabled and even lost their life.
This is not a glorified holiday, it’s an unsupported adventure and so by its very nature extremely risky. You really are on your own and you really are putting both your health and life at risk. This is what makes them adventures.”
So to make it happen:
- A decent team
- A worthy charity
- A sponsor or two?
Hmm… I wonder…
