I’ve been thinking about this little project for over 5 years, and I still think it’s a cracking little one. So decided to explore it further.
The simple concept is called Pixel Scouts™ – a challenge / badge system for bored adults to earn, through getting out their comfort zone and gain experiences. The thing is, this idea is obviously not new.
Life Scouts Example
Several years ago, Life Scouts was launched on Tumblr, however its purpose was more about sharing stories and experiences on Tumblr instead of inspiring people to go and enjoy the activities themselves.
It also seemed to grow a foolish amount of badges in its collection, to inspire stories – so the collectors / hoarders amongst us couldn’t even collect them all. But saying that, during ‘Sports Month’ there was a hide-and-seek badge, so wasn’t that bad. 😉
The Pixel Scouts Idea
What I have in mind is a web-based system, where Scouters can join in to achieve badges for random age appropriate activities and adventures. The point is to bring adventure to people’s lives – no matter their background. As there are so many variants of the Scouting movement in general, there clearly is no ‘owner’ to the concept, from a Scouting point of view. So no worries concerning any conflict.
I’m thinking that they could use their member blog to post about their adventures, as evidence, to gain credits. A place where they can post videos, photos, and write-ups to discuss what they have done to achieve the goals set out for each badge. Also enjoy the idea of creating the ‘Home-brew’ badge, or ‘Pub Scout’ Pub crawling badge – as examples. Age appropriate activities.
I also want to ensure that these activities will be interesting and accessible to all adults. I think it is important, with the great success of The University of the 3rd Age, that anyone who feels young enough for some fun can join in.
For those who are ‘collectors’, they can push themselves further to complete their collection of badges. But it is all available and achievable at everyone’s own rate.
Random idea generally, but wanted to get it logged to remember later on… 😛
